Includes correspondence, printed and scrapbook material, and photographs concerning the life and military career of Lt. Colonel William Edwin Dyess. Collection bulks (1932-1975) with scrapbook material concerning Dyess' experiences in World War II, his death, and the naming of the Abilene Air Force Base in his honor. Also included is a genealogy of the Dyess-Jenkins Family. Of particular interest is correspondence (1936-1942) by Dyess which depicts flight training and military life prior to, and at the beginning of World War II.

Military pilot, former prisoner of war, war hero. Born in 1916 in Albany, Texas, Dyess graduated from Tarleton Agricultural College at Stephenville, Texas in 1936, and then entered U.S. Army Air Force Air Cadet Training. Served as commander of the 21st Pursuit Squadron in the Phillipines during World War II, was captured by the Japanese in the Battle of Bataan, survived the "Bataan Death March," and escaped after 361 days of imprisonment.
